Starting a New Student Organization

The following criteria must be met before a new student organization will be considered for active status on campus:

  1. The organization is bringing something new and different to campus.  If the organization is similar to an existing organization, you may be encouraged to contact them directly and explore joining their organization.
  2. Participation in the organization is safe for all participants and adheres to all College Risk Management policies. Please note that all student organizations must be approved by the College Risk Management team and additional information may be required based on the nature of your organization.
  3. Participation in the organization:
    • Eligibility for membership is open to all actively enrolled Kalamazoo College students
    • Participation is beneficial to the student body and campus at large
    • Participation is safe and respectful for all students, faculty, and staff
    • Participation is a contributor to a positive sense of community at Kalamazoo College
  4. The organization’s mission and values are consistent with that of Kalamazoo College’s mission and values.
  5. The organization agrees to respectfully receive criticism from the campus community and engage in respectful dialogue regarding your organization’s values and mission. This includes actively listening, researching perspectives, and thoughtfully responding to received feedback.
  6. The organization must have at least four members with at least one member designated as a Student Activities contact person and one member designated as a Student Funding Board contact.
  7. The organization or its members on behalf of the organization shall not discriminate on any basis prohibited by the College’s Nondiscrimination Policy and shall not engage in conduct prohibited by the Policy Against Harassment Based on Protected Characteristics. This includes but is not limited to membership, leadership, activities, or operations. The organization’s constitution must also include a statement that the organization does not discriminate on the basis of protected characteristics and honors the College’s Nondiscrimination Policy, Policy Against Harassment, Policy Statement on Hazing, and related policies.
  8. The organization or its members shall not condone, encourage, engage in, or otherwise engage in hazing as defined in the College’s Policy Statement on Hazing and policies.
  9. The organization has submitted a Constitution and will make available to Student Activities its constitutions, bylaws, rules, and statements of purpose, and articles of incorporation, if such documents exist, during the annual re-registration period.
  10. The organization has a faculty or staff adviser.
